SCHOOL NEWS

Cincinnati school officials identified Wednesday the current site of Quebec Heights Elementary School as their preferred location for adding a West Side school back to the citywide school construction plan. The site, on Ross Avenue in East Price Hill, was eliminated from the plan earlier this decade amid declining enrollment projections. But more recent projections now indicate that a school is necessary there to alleviate overcrowding. Previously, planners had remained vague on the exact locations. The school board could take official action on the planners' wishes March 30.

Also at the meeting, officials said they would appeal the City of Cincinnati's zoning decision last week that prohibits it from adding a gymnasium on the side of Westwood School. The district wants to renovate the 100-year-old building and add a gymnasium, but some neighbors and preservationists successfully argued to a city official that the addition would damage the streetscape along Harrison Avenue. Under a 2004 law. the appeal will go directly to City Council, where several council members have already spoken out against the project as it's currently designed.

Another option for CPS, should it lose its appeal, is to build the gym on the building's other side, along the more residential Epworth Avenue. But residents on that street are already organizing against that option.
