From the President
Happy Fall Season to everyone, although it does not feel like fall as of yet!
I hope everyone survived the summer swelter and enjoyed some of the days at one of the many Cincinnati Parks in East Price Hill. I hope everyone enjoyed the EPHIA summer picnic held at Mt. Echo Park and chaired by Ms. Barbara Niehoff. I saw many of you at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company performance of Much Ado About Nothing' at Mt. Echo. What a performance by these fine players in the heat of a mid summer Sunday afternoon. EPHIA sent a letter of thanks for the show and encouraged another performance next year. When speaking to one of the cast members after the show, it was relayed to me that the Mt. Echo show was the best attended (with over 300 attendees) of the 10 or so they put on at various parks. EPHIA recently hosted the Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band' at Mt. Echo Park to over a 100 attendees on a delightful September evening. The band, the park and the full moon were all thanks to Ms. Barbara Niehoff's organization. This is the second year for EPHIA to host a concert in the park and both Lee's Junction and the Buffalo Ridge Jazz Band were fantastic. This year EPHIA was successful, thanks to Patti Hogan, in securing $525 in funds from the Cincinnati Park Board Grant and through the Schmidlapp Foundation Grant. It is my hope that EPHIA continues to seek the grants that allow us to host these events. Lastly, look forward to one final 2007 Mt. Echo concert to be hosted by the Mt. Echo Advisory Committee through the funds of NSP.
Mary Croft, Jim Grawe and John Wall have been in contact with the city architect, Diego Jordan, and are progressing with designs for the new Mt. Hope/ Elberon gateway. Steven Schuckman, lead designer at Cincy Parks, is planning to attend the October meeting with a new entry way design for Wilson Park. EPHIA membership will determine to spend the $90,000 in dedicated funds towards this improved entranceway or towards park lighting along the newly installed pathway as was originally planned.
If you have not noticed, Artworks is progressing with the mural for East Price Hill on Warsaw Av. It is located across from D-3 headquarters and adjacent to the Zeiser Construction Co. Thanks to Diana Valkaria for her lead and the other EPHIA members for their involvement in this endeavor. We also have placed the 8 large planters on Warsaw on 3 Oct 08. Thanks again to Diana for engineering this feat and Tom Croft for preparing the NBD proposal which funded this endeavor. Stop in and thank the businesses who have decided to plant, water and maintain these planters along with the businesses who are maintaining the older planters. Thanks to; Wegman Companies, Zeiser Construction, Steve's Barber Shop, United Window Cleaning, FDL, Rae Jaes Salon, Price Hill Historical Society, Alpine Dry Cleaning, Anointed Cuts, the Deaf Institute, and Dittelburgers along Warsaw Av. and to; Adco Heating and A/C, the Pit Stop, Collins Transmissions, and E & J Pub along Glenway Av. And if they are not green and colorful ask them to please replant.
The city's Traffic road and Operations Division (TROD) curb and sidewalk replacement along Purcell and Bassett streets have been completed along with the asphalt work on Wessels and Carson. We appreciate the infrastructure upgrades. This was thanks to our CPR (community priority request). Be prepared to make neighborhood CPR's again in 2008.
1018 Considine has been ordered a public nuisance over the summer and 953 Elberon had a public nuisance hearing held on 3 Oct 07. Expect demolition within a month or two for 1018 Considine.
Mrs. Rosa Blackwell, superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools, is scheduled to attend our October membership meeting.
If you haven't received a call from one of our nominating committee volunteers as of yet, please expect one and please volunteer for one of the executive board positions or the one trustee position. I expect that our new president will continue the progress we have made as we have many capable individuals. This progress has been made thanks to the fantastic work of this current board of directors and committee chairs. I cannot express my appreciation enough for the great job the members of this board have done. Without them we would be in a rut. When you see them out volunteering or at a meeting you owe them a word of thanks. And to all of you who have helped this organization make improvements in our neighborhood, I owe you great thanks!!!
As stated in my last post, I hope all this activity sparks an interest for people to become active in this organization. We have many positive things taking place that should overshadow any negative things that do occur. With your help on Court Watch, Beautification, Citizen's on Patrol, Problem Properties or the picnic committees, we as a neighborhood can make this area, once again an owner occupied neighborhood.
This will probably be my final report as I will step aside after the November election. It has been an honor and privilege to represent the residents of this outstanding neighborhood. I sincerely hope that the efforts of this organization somehow improved your quality of life, sense of safety, or your view of our neighborhood. This is one great place to live due to its many assets. It will remain my goal as an active member of EPHIA to return this neighborhood homes back to a majority of them being owner occupied again. It is absolutely necessary that the fantastic homes of this neighborhood be restocked with families who care for and invest in the homes they reside in. So please
Don't Rag, BRAG!!!'
See you October 15th!
